Video 1. Visual aura of migraine

Video-1 shows a visual aura from migraine headache like that suffered by Lashley and reported in 1941. “Normal vision” is transferred to the occipital brain cortex. The visual migraine aura begins with a “visual obscuration,” or positive (pink stippling) alteration in vision that is followed by a loss (gray) of vision. This change took 22 minutes to cross his visual field, a distance of 67 mm in occipital cortex. Accordingly, Lashley concluded his migraine aura traveled at 3 millimeters/minute, an unheard of slow rate. (This video was created with the assistance of Mr. Dale Mertes from the University of Chicago.)

@conrad11187 It might be useful for you to talk this over with a migraine doc or a health clinic with experience with migraine.

@reptile1000 Well, Im quiet suprised because the same think happends to me when a Migraine starts developing but the visual aura thing stays like for 15 mins and then the the Minor Headache Occurs! and its really a big issue in currently
@Liquefaction Sometimes visual changes of a migraine aura (or other types of change) can occur without headache.
Having one now, fun/
I have been seeing this flicker for years and I never understood what it was!! But I’ve never felt like I’ve had a migraine before..
@2BuRn4 Stay with it! You need a headache specialist who can help you build a program - lifestyle, medications as needed, etc that can best help you.
I’ve had severe migraines my whole life. They started at age 4 but were not as bad as they are now. I’m 22 now and can’t go to school or work because i get 2-4 migraines a month. getting the visual auras, followed by severe pain and vomiting. then feel terrible for the next 2 days. I’ve been to every type of specialist and nobody can seem to find the cause of these. i have allergies to some of the medications. they’ve tried every type of medicine. gotta keep searching for the answer though : )
I’m having one right now i can barly see what i’m typing this usualls happens for about 30 minutes then disapears then the extreme head pains happen for like 3-5 hours i havent had one since augast of last year this one took me by subrise anyone have any pointers on how to feel better?
i get these all the time
@BellaCullen35 Funny you say that at 14. That’s when mine were at their worst too. That was the only time I would get multiple aura attacks. I’m 26 now, and I only get them about 3-4 times a year now with only one aura attack lasting only about half an hour. I’m sure yours will only get better from here. Ask your doctor for “axert” to take while having the aura to help with the pain of the headache after
@BellaCullen35 I used to get kind of tunnel vision and that was my first sign a migraine was coming on, so I would take an aspirin, then immediately take a nap and it really helped me so the migraine was basically taken care of in my sleep and I would not wake up to head throbbing etc. Only had migraines from about 14-17 and then never again.
That worked for me, but not sure if the aspirin was necessare or even beneficial at all.
This is very close to the type of SS I have.
Been having them for about 15 years.
I have one episode about every 7-8 months on average.
They seem to be related to watching a computer screen (or a slot machine..lol) but not always.
I am usually under mild stress when they occur.
Never felt any pain.
No dizzyness.
They usually last from 5 mins to 15 mins.
So far I have never had one while I was driving
They are just annoying.
Thy used to unsettle me but I am more or less used to them now.

me i experienced migraine since i was in high school and now im already 20 i though my migraine was vanished after the last attack when i was a first year college (im 17 years old at that time) then i just realized that is not gone as i thought when it attacked me last thursday again T_T i hate it when my vision goes terrible wrong huhuhuhuhuhu it feels like that im going to die!!!! i dont take any medication cause im afraid so…. i just endure the pain until it stop attacking…
I had one the other day. During my Migrane my girlfriend heated up an herbal eye pack and gave it to me. She said, this smells funny but try it, it might help. It was after I was suffering for 20mins or so, but when I put it over my eyes… the pattern shifted away from my vision. My vision slowly came back. *** The heat pack is available at like Bed Bath & beyond. You heat it in the microwave for a few seconds. I recommend trying it. Something to do with the heat really helped me. Hope it helps
mine starts in the top right and stays there and gets bigger then dissappears, takes about 45 minutes - then bang sore head for few days.
i get these. on the other side tho. i hate them. had them since i was about 16 and now 22. havnt figured out any trigger for it yet. but i think it may be due to stress or depression (at least temporarily). theyre the worst. ruin my whole day and difficult to do anything the next day. sigh.
I have something like this many many times already and everytime it occurs, I feel really really scared. It’s like a nightmare to me. And after this, I would vomit so hard as if my intestines would go with the vomiting. I even became blind for just 20 seconds I think. I shouted because I thought I’ll be blind forever. The funny thing was my that my father got angry with me (perhaps because he was scared too) and he just told me to ask forgiveness for all of my sins! Funny! Lol.

@SeaxneatOfEssex That’s a common pattern for an aura. Many believe an aura occurs because of spreading depression (see knol). Why a spreading depression occurs seems to depend on a “sufficient volume of brain” being activated at the same time. This can occur for all the reasons that commonly trigger migraine - psuhing a brain region past a threshold that then activates it to make the spreading depression. Hope that helps.
@BellaCullen35 Hey Bella, just so you know, your not the only one who gets the ‘hand numbing’ either. Its bloody awful.
Had another one of these yesterday, quite coincidental that this video should appear as recommended. This is very close to what I experience except for me the blind spot occurs in the centre, yet I still have perfect periferal vision.
Is there any understanding of why migraines occur at all? Mine seem to be brought on either by prolonged exposure to bright unnatural light or stress. Or both? That said its not the vision that worries me its the numbness felt in the hands!
@BellaCullen35 That is a good plan.
@rkraig Thanks. I’ve seen a neurologist already but I’m going to try to go back to the doctor because these are so terrible.
